Course status changes to 'completed' after opening it incompletely
Sep 07, 2018
Hi
When I try out my storyline courses in Scorm Cloud, as well as in our LMS, I get this problem:
When you open the course but immediately closes it quickly by the x in the upper right corner of the window that pops up with the course content - the course completion status changes to 'Complete'.
If I let the course open properly it works fine. The status is set according to the settings, eg. course completion trigger is triggered or a test is passed, if not the status is 'incomplete'.
Unfortunately, some users will eventually close the course content window very quickly when it opens up. But they are not supposed to be granted 'completed'.
Any ideas what might cause this error?

Oh no, Helene!
I could imagine that could be problematic.
How do you have the reporting and tracking set for the course?
Would you be able to share the .story file for us to take a look? If you cannot share here in the forums, you are welcome to share here privately.
Hi Leslie
Oh yes, it is quite a problem. We have some courses that are supposed to be mandatory, so it is not good to have people pass in half a second.
I have attached a test.story file. My reporting and tracking settings in this case are 'complete course trigger', Scorm 2004 3rd edition, Complete/Failed.
Hi Helene
I uploaded your course to ScormCloud and tested there - I'm not getting a complete when I close the X in the browser - unless I misunderstand the issue.

Hi Wendy
Thanks for taking a look at it so quickly.
The thing is: the problem happens when you close the course window BEFORE it has properly loaded.
Take a look at my recording: Peek Video
Oh I see it's what's you mean but not sure why it's happening.
I did change the Scorm from 2004 to 1.2 and closed out the window and it shows the Incomplete status - not sure if it's something your LMS provider can help with.
Hi Wendy
Thanks. Reverting back to 1.2 is not a real option. Unfortunately, my LMS provider cannot help much. They always point to Storyline/the course material as the cause of the problem not the LMS - that is why I came here with the hope of help. After all, the problem is with a course published with Articulate Storyline and it exists when I run it in Scorm Cloud, so I might expect Articulate could take a look close look at it.
Hi Helene,
Thanks so much for sharing your file with us! I'm seeing the same problem you're seeing when publishing with SCORM 2004. I even tried adding an additional slide to the beginning of the content, but the course still marked as complete if I quickly closed the window.
Let me get this in front of my team so we can begin looking into the cause of this problem. I'll keep you posted on any new information I receive!
Hi Alyssa
Thanks a lot. I am very happy that you have taken this up with your team. I hope that they will find a solution.
Hi! We're having the same issue with a SL course being marked as Completed in the LMS if the eLearning is closed before it gets a chance to load. Any suggested solutions?
Hi Learning Development!
Our team is still looking into this issue. We've found that it happens when you're using these settings:
Did you use those publishing settings in your course?
Hi Alyssa
We had the problem both in courses with completion trigger and with quiz result tracking. We use Scorm 2004. We had already been advised that we could use SCORM 1.2 to get rid of the problem. But that causes other issues, so we prefer 2004.
However: I just realised that there is a setting in our LMS that seems to resolve the problem.
I found out that the setting in Saba LMS called 'Score' should not be unchecked. In the case of quiz result tracking it had been unchecked by mistake (it happens when you upload a new scorm). When this setting is checked there is no problem with the above described issue.
In the course with the completion trigger I did not check it because the course should not report any score. But now that I have checked 'score' the system reports 'course was not completed' when it is opened and closed before it has loaded. So the problem is also resolved in this case.
Oh wow!
Thanks for chiming back in to share the details of your findings within your LMS Helene.
That could certainly help someone out in the future.
I've shared this with our team as well as we are investigating the behavior.
Thanks for the information Alyssa and Helene! We use SCORM 2004 as this will push quiz results to our LMS - Saba Halogen. SCORM 1.2 does not push 'fail' quiz results to the LMS, which is problematic for us.
Checking the 'score' box in our version of Saba Halogen doesn't stop the above issue, unfortunately.
Thanks so much for confirming that, Learning Development. We'll keep you posted on our progress with this bug. I'm really sorry for the headaches it is causing you!
