Course with videos that won't load when played on webserver

Jul 29, 2013

I have recently created a course that includes 3 videos from our tech department.  These videos are in mp4 format and were inserted directly into the storyline file.  When published works just fine when viewing on my PC, the company shared drive, and local server.  However when published and viewed through the webserver the videos do not play.

Has anyone experienced this before?

We have attempted to remove the video files and convert to another format but we continue to run into the same problem when opened through the webserver.

Any thoughts and assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Ashley & Ashley,

I have the exact same problem.  I finally figured out how to access the IIS and was able to add the appropriate MIME type to support .mp4 files once given admin rights to my computer.  However, videos still do not play.  Below is what one of our IT folks suggested, but I'm still unclear as to how to proceed.  Advice?  Thanks!!

"The files need to be linked into the course and programmed to autoplay to have them automatically launch. That slide needs to be programmed as an autoadvance slide to the timing of the length of the video. For some reason, when the video is embedded, it causes a glitch and is not able to be played, but when the course Hyperlinks out to the video and starts the hyperlink automatically, it works because the video is running outside of the course but automatically pops. The programmer has to adjust the timing of the slide to allow the participant to finish the video and then have the slide advance. He would need to be provided the exact URL to where the video is on the server so he can use that to program the slide to link to it as well."

Hi Graelynn,

If I'm understanding your IT department's response, it sounds like the video won't work properly if it's embedded and/or if the slide that's housing the video is not set to advance automatically (vs. by user) or if the timeline varies from the video itself.

How are you inserting your MP4 video? Try inserting it onto a blank slide as a file and set it to play automatically. You may also want to set the advancement option to "Advance Automatically".

If you try that and upload to the server, does that work?

I'm not quite sure what s/he means when they refer to the additional URL information with the server, unless they're referring to actually embedding it or giving that data to a web admin.

Let us know how it goes!

Hi All,

The issue was finally resolved, after much time with multiple IT personnel and lots of people saying the issue was out of their scope. Even though I was given admin rights to my computer so I could add the mp4 MIME type, it didn't do anything as I didn't have admin rights to the web server. Even setting the video to advance automatically didn't make a difference. It all had to do with the settings on the web server.

I eventually talked to the person who gave me the advice of hyperlinking the video and found out that her workaround was to add the actuall URL to the video, instead of embedding the file so that her end users would have to click on the hyperlink. I'm glad we were able to finally resolve the issue because from a design perspective, I would much rather prefer the end users to see the video on the screen, as opposed to a web address that they have to click on and open in another window.

Yay! Video issue - resolved!
