Crash while publishing story
Feb 05, 2013
Good morning!
I have recently been experiencing problems with Articulate. I just got my laptop OS upgraded to Windows7 (I work for goverment so it takes a while to get the new systems Since this upgrade, Articulate Storyine has been crashing while editing sound and now it crashes while I try to publish.
Do you have any suggestions as to what could be going wrong? Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Sylvia

Hi Sylvia!
Are you working exclusively on a your local drive, as opposed to a network or USB drive? It might also be a good idea to run through the incremental steps outlined here. And if you continue having trouble, please don't hesitate to contact our support team. Thanks!
Sometimes, in large projects I have had storyline crash, often just saving before publishing stops this.
What was the solution to this issue? I am having the same issue and have submitted a ticket.
I gave the same link suggested above to our Desktop team but nothing changed.
Hi Joanna!
Thanks for mentioning that you are working with our support team. I see your support case (00531200) and you should be hearing from someone soon.
After diagnosing Sylvia above, this solution was recommended, but we did not hear back from the user. I would advise following through with your support case.
Hello, I am having the same issue as the others above. I have a relatively large project file, which has crashed multiple times while trying to publish. I'm working locally and "repairing" (re-installing) is definitely not an option for me.
Hi Nate!
Most of the issues here seem to be file or system specific. You are welcome to work directly with our support team here if you wish.
Help...12.3 MB file keeps repeating some process in the background causing my CPU usage to climb and maintain activity 25% each time I attempt to preview or publish. The attached "PrtSc" is around 75% constant activity only browser and Storyline open. The CPU activity is additive so if I try to publish again it will climb to 100%. Laptop gets very HOT. I have removed/replaced Storyline 2 to attempt to fix. Same issue. Thinking I will go back to Storyline 1.
Hi Joesph-- Sorry to hear about that frustrating issue. I wouldn't say your course is extraordinarily large, so I'm not sure why it's using so much memory on your machine when previewing and publishing.
Would you be able to describe your computer's set up? Our system requirements are listed in this article. Maybe we could take a look at your .story file, too. You can attach it here, or submit it privately if that works better for you.

got a reply from Eloisa Garcia support@articulate.com earlier today and sent me an updated file with the correction which is working now. Seems like it was just one hyperlink vice a hotspot which caused the problem. Seems really odd as I have hyperlinks on text to show hidden slides and mouseovers throughout the training.
So far working.... Thanks
Hi Joseph!
Glad to hear that Eloisa was able to assist you and I appreciate you popping in and sharing an update with the community.
I'm having the same problem after adding over 100 hotspots. Is there any way to get more info about how to fix this, instead of waiting for Storyline to fix it for me?
Hi Marie-Jo!
You're having an issue with crashing as well?
As you can see in the responses above most all of these issues have been file specific, so there is no solution to share here.
You are welcome to import into a new file and see if this alleviates your issue.
Please be sure that you are utilizing the latest software update for your version as well:
Storyline 1
Storyline 2
I've found this issue tends to happen with larger courses that have a lot going on. I often find my courses will fail to publish, then I have to try 1 or 2 more times for it to work and go through.
Hi Nate,
Sorry to hear that you're running into crashing issues as well. Did you look that you're using the latest update of Storyline 2 Update 9? Also are you publishing to a local drive as recommended above? Have you looked at going through the repair of Storyline?
As Leslie mentioned, this thread deals with a number of users who encountered the issue and it tended to be file specific or computer specific, so you may want to go through those steps first and then I'd invite you to work with our Support engineers.
Ya I'm well aware of the commonly recommended "fixes". I'm currently working with support on much more serious problems, so this is pretty far down the list of items for me to spend time on.
Hi Nate,
I'm sorry to hear that - and if you'd like to share your case number here with us I'm happy to follow along in that as well.
Check for special characters in the course title. I just had to troubleshoot a course where an apostrophe pasted from Word was causing a crash when published. I replaced with a plain text one and course published fine. The # symbol has caused similar problems in other courses I've worked on.
Articulate please address this for a future update.
My courses are crashing due to other reasons, but that is certainly something other users on this thread should look out for and consider when troubleshooting. I would like to second the request for addressing that issue, as there are times "&" looks much better than "and" in a course title.
Hi, Joseph and Nate -- Thanks for your input and ideas related to use of symbols and specials characters in the course title. The best way to voice your opinion to our Product Team is by way of this form.
Thanks for all the advice guys. Never really did find the issue, so I narrowed it down to the correct slide (ie. the slide causing the crash) by publishing scene by scene until publish failed, then slide by slide to ID the faulty slide (this is very time consuming especially if you have more than one faulty slide)
There was nothing obviously weird about that slide so I just rebuilt it from scratch, and the full publish worked. Still perplexed.
Thanks for sharing an update here, Marie-Jo, and please let us know if you should need anything further!
Also, to clarify - the special characters or symbols in file names/paths is not a limitation of Storyline but a set up within Microsoft. Learn more about naming conventions in this Microsoft article.
Hi,
I have the same issue. My project used to publish without problems, but now articulate storyline 2 crashes during publishing.. The only thing I changed in the file was move some buttons. When I recovered the file to a version that did work, even that version did not work anymore.. Other projects work fine. When I import all the slides to a new file, it changes the size of a lot of images, and it is a fairly big project, so changing all the image sizes would take a lot of time.. Is re-installing articulate an option? And is there an option to lock the size of slides while importing to overcome that issue? The slides have the same size (1500px wide)
Thank you.
Jelle
I managed to find out what was wrong. For some kind of reason a fill in the blank question got corrupted in the file. I didn't change anything since the last time I published the file. I troubleshooted by removing scenes and publishing again. Followed by deleting slides one-by-one and publishing.. Now I only had to create that one slide another time and it's working now..
Jelle
Great news Jelle! I appreciate you popping in to share an update with your findings and solution.
Welcome to E-Learning Heroes by the way!
