Creating variables (triggers)
Jan 29, 2015
Hi there
I am hoping someone out there will be able to coach me through a problem I have not been able to solve on my own.
I am using Storyline 2. On my current project I have setup multiple layers on my slides, is there a way to make the learner click on all of the options before being able to click the next button? At the moment I have no way of knowing if learners are going though each layer or just clicking next?
I have been told that you can set up variables where you set triggers to negative and when the learner clicks on it, it becomes positive? Also that all the triggers need to be positive before being able to click next? If this is possible would someone be able to explain how to do so is basic terms 😊 ? I have tried on my own but been unsuccessful.
Any help ell would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ren
here is a SL2 tutorial on variables that might help
https://community.articulate.com/series/20/articles/introduction-to-variables
Otherwise you can load your story file here for someone to have a look at and help you - it's hard to explain in basic terms without seeing how your project is set up
Besides using variables, you might also want to consider using the visited state of objects that are clicked to show layers. See attached a quick example with four buttons that are used to display layers. The Next button on this slide is initially disabled and turned to its Normal state once all four layer have been viewed.
Hello Ren,
Here is some information on the built in states in Storyline that Michael is referring to. Using states or variables will help you achieve this.
If you would like to share your file, you can add it here using the Add attachment button.
Thanks for the help team. I will try and apply these to my project. I appreciate the quick replies. Ren
Thanks for the update Ren, let us know if you need anything further.
