Okay, cheers Phill. I could also not see the ability to re-size the marker to be larger so the picture was visible...but my solution works great for my current needs anyway.

I found the way of adding the picture in the marker - but like you cannot find a way to resize it - so how did you get the marker "effects" on the picture? Thanks
I make my marker fill and stroke completely transparent. Then adding an image to each state you want to change (Normal, Hover, Down, etc..) you can still use the marker label. Turn off the animation. The animations are built for the small circle. They'll either look funny or you won't be able to see them.

I could not find an option so I found a way around by making the marker translucent and inserting an image in the marker space
right click and choose format then set fill to picture
