Custom Invalid Answer Layer for Graded Sequence Drop Down
Jun 21, 2017
I've successfully created custom invalid answer layers for graded questions in the true/false, multiple choice, and multiple response formats using the approach outlined in this tutorial: https://articulate.com/support/article/how-to-create-a-custom-invalid-answer-message.
However, I'd like to create a custom invalid answer layer for a graded sequence drop down question. My struggle is that I can't attach a conditional trigger to the drop down box options because they don't appear as individual objects on the slide. Has anyone successfully created a custom layer for this type of question?
I should mention that I do know how to customize the invalid answer message, but that's not what I'm looking to do. I want a customized invalid answer layer that matches the look and feel of the rest of my course, as well as the rest of the graded questions that I was able to figure this out for. Appreciate any ideas the community may have for me. Thanks!

Hi Christin
just curious how you are getting the default 'Invalid answer' popup to appear for this question type? Even if I don't make a change to the drag items and click submit I get 'incorrect' layer.
Hi, Wendy - I realized I mis-titled this post. I'm looking at the Sequence Drop Down question (not the Sequence Drag and Drop). I edited the post to be correct now.
You are right about the Sequence Drag and Drop, though. There isn't a default invalid answer message. It goes straight to "incorrect."
Hi Christin,
You're right - the sequence drop down doesn't have a state associated with those items to indicate that the user has or hasn't selected something for all the answers yet.
Editing the "invalid" answer as a layer has been a feature request in the past, and if you'd like to see something similar please share your voice as a Feature requests here too!
Thanks, Ashley. I submitted a feature request.
Thanks for taking the time to submit one, Christin!
Hi from a new user.
I'm looking for an easy to create a drop down question type where only one of the answers from the list is correct.
I have used other authoring tools where the drop down question is a standard feature. Does artiuclate offer this as standard feature?
I'm new to artiuculate and I am learning the product as I go.
Thank you for any help and advice you can offer.
Hi Wendy, and welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community! We're glad you're here. 😀
Within Storyline 360 there are two question types that may meet your needs: a Sequence Drop-down or a Matching Drop-down. These are both built into the form based questions described here.
There's also an older example on how to set up a custom drop down here that you may find helpful!
