Custom navigation in Storyline

Sep 26, 2013

Hi guys,

I've been creating custom navigation in Storyline using the master slides and disabling the normal forward and back buttons. This looks brilliant but does create a load more problems when I need to lock pages/skip around etc.

So I've decided to go back to using the out of the box navigation but was wondering if there was a way to make the buttons look different other than just text and colours.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi all!

I have a problem with my navigation controls and I'm in a hurry to fix it. Hope someone knows what I'm doing wrong.

I build my own customized backward and forward buttons but not in the slide master due to that I had so many layers on different slides and I wanted to have control of every button. Everything works fine in the course moving forward and backwards with all triggers but in the quizz (which is embedded in between different parts of the course) the default buttons become visible when i respond to a question and go back to previous question. All slides throughout the entire course are enabled also on these quizz-slides.

I have marked "Resume saved state" on all quizz-slides and on the course slides "Resume initial state". When I change this to be "Resume initial state" on the quizz-slides too it seems to work (the default buttons do not show when I go back and forth) BUT then I miss the chance for the person to go back and review his/her answers in the quizz..

What am I missing here?

Thankful for help!

Hi Maria,

I'm sorry to hear about the navigation trouble you're experiencing, but I'm having a hard time following what's happening. It may be easier if you're able to share the .story file here with us so that we can take a look at what's happening and try to replicate the behavior. If you're unable to share it here, you're welcome to share it privately with us here.

Thanks Maria, it looks like you got some great help from Jonathon, and I wanted to share the portion of his answer here related to your quiz navigation for anyone else following along:

Looks like this is by design as I was informed by our Quality Assurance Team.

Originally, without using a custom navigation buttons, you will only see a submit button in the quiz question (remember the built-in player navigation buttons are disabled). If you click submit you will proceed to the next question. If you go back to the last question and all you have there is the submit button again, you will be stuck on that slide. So they designed it that the PREV and NEXT button will appear when you go back even if it's disabled.

Anyway I've brought up your case already to our Quality Assurance Team. I guess it's better to have those buttons appear than to break the
functionality of the quiz. I cannot offer a time frame for when or if thisissue will be addressed. I would recommend, at this time, to take a
different approach so that you continue working on your project

Hi all, I'm attempting to use custom navigation in a short course. I created a navigation bar that pops up when a user hovers their mouse near the bottom of the screen. However, the navigation bar abruptly vanishes, despite my cursor still being well-within the hotspot, and I can't get it back. That means there's no way to naviagte once it's gone because the "next" button is on the navigation bar layer.

I'm also having a problem allowing a user to change their name (variable) so that it shows up the way they want on the certificate at the end. There's some javascript on that slide that migth be srewing things up, but I can't tell. That might be for another thread though.
