Custom navigation on Master Slides: how to indicate next/previous in Story view?
Jul 15, 2015
When you use the player navigation (next/forward) or custom navigation on the slide then the Story View nicely displays the slides that are connected on Next/Previous with a grey arrow.
When you disable the player navigation and have the next button on the Master Slide, then it does not display grey arrows and all slides becomes "loose".
In this example, the Title Screen does not show which slide is Next in the Story view. However, when played back it works.
When you create custom navigation it's better to have this on the Master slide as well. But when I do this for all slides, then all becomes loose and I don't have overview.
What's a good way to work with navigation on the slide Master when you want to disable the normal Next/Forward Button?

Hi Sjoerd,
Great question - and I'll defer to the community on this one, as unfortunately there isn't a way to force the arrows to appear when using your own custom navigation.
Hi Ashley,
I also noticed it's not easy to create custom navigation (buttons) on the slide master instead of on the slides. If the button is just on the slid background, it works, but If you have buttons on other objects then the button can't be clicked. I am sure I will find a workaround, but for now I decided to have the custom slide navigation on each slide copied.
When having it back on the slides, the Story view now also displays that relation. Might be something for future improvement.
Thanks Sjoerd, and if you'd like to see additional information please feel free to share your thoughts here.
Having the buttons on the slides will allow for the normal relation to display, slide masters or such are where you'll run into issues.
Has there been any further development on this issue within Articulate Storyline 2 or has this not been addressed?
Asking as I am currently experiencing the same issue and it would be a shame for a function such as this not to work.
Hi Rhys,
Thanks for checking in. There is not a change to this behavior in Storyline (2 or the current versions of Storyline 3/360). It's something that would still be a feature request at this time, and if you'd like to share your thoughts as well feel free to send it along to our team right here. 😁
Hi Rhys, thanks for joining the discussion! Since this thread is a bit older, can you tell me more about what you're trying to do?
Are you using custom navigation buttons on the Slide Master? If so, are the slides not displayed in linear order in Story View?
I know this is an older thread, but have also tried to do this to no avail. When I put my custom Previous and Next buttons on the main Slide Master it doesn't show in Story View. It also doesn't seem to trigger the Previous button. I have even tried to copy paste onto every slide master and still doesn't work. I guess I will have to just copy and paste them on to every slide?
Hi Stephanie,
Do the buttons not show on the individual slides, or you're not seeing the link between the slides in story view? The latter is expected if they're custom buttons to just advance to the next slides.
If you're not seeing buttons on your slides though, we'd want to take a look at what is set up and troubleshoot from there! Can you share a copy of your .story file with us?
I have the same problem right now.
Hi Tico and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)
Thanks for letting us know that you're running into an issue similar to the one Stephanie reported with custom Previous and Next buttons, but the course not navigating as expected.
With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.
I'm having this issue today. Building Previous/Next buttons into the master slides doesn't produce the navigation arrows inside Story view. (SL3) Is there a fix?
Hi Fred,
Thanks for contacting us and sharing that you are experiencing results.
The arrows displaying in story view for your custom navigation on the slide masters is still considered a feature request at this time.
Thanks for sharing your .story file with us privately. I'll convert this to a feature request for you.
HI
I think this good solution
if you Select option (next & previous) of swipe for all slides, then it will be in ordered, then customize navigation will works in master slide.
