Custom variables saved to Articulate Online

Jan 06, 2014

I have a Storyline where I have created variables (number, text and true/false), and I publish to Articulate Online.  I run the program online after publishing, answering the questions and going through the slides.   I go to Articulate Online and run the reports. I can’t seem to get custom variables to output when I run the reports from Articulate Online.  I tried creating a custom report, still no luck.  I’m thinking that only information on the result slide gets saved on the web server.  So how do I get my variable data to save to the results slide?  Am I going about this the wrong way?  I feel like I’m so close yet so far away from getting it to work.

Just to give you an idea of what I’m trying to do with one of the slides, I have 3 hot spots and I want to record how many times a user clicks on any of the hot spots.

Greg,

i am am away from my computer so I cannot test this solution and verify the works.  Insert a slide after the question that you want to track.  The slide type could be an essay question. Then set the text of the essay question to equal the results of the number of the clicks from the slide before. Next set the visibility of the essay text invisible or you could write it off of the player view. Then have some text that says something like click next to look at the results of your quiz. Set the next button to submit your essay answer to the LMS. I think that might do the trick.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to the forum.

Rob’s solution works for saving custom text variables to text variables. Thanks Rob. That moved me in the right direction.

However, I have a numeric variable that I need to save to the results slide. So, how do I convert a custom numeric variable to a text variable so I can assign it as a text entry variable on the result side? Can I do this in JavaScript? I’ll need to find the code for this if this will work.

I saw a few people talk about saving variables to a file but didn’t find any code for doing that. Is there code for saving all custom variables and graded/survey/freeform/etc. variables to a file myself without using a result slide?

I also tried to use the numeric type question under the graded tab under quizzing when I inserted a slide. I couldn’t get this to work either. I also tried to use a numeric data entry on the slide and save that variable. So far the only luck I’ve had is saving a custom text variable to a text entry variable.

Still looking for help and answers.

Greg
