Customizing Layout of Step by Step slides

I have step by step slides that I want to customize so that the look is consistent with the rest of my course - background colour, a shape that has a title in it, a layer I need on each slide. Applying layouts from the Slide Master doesn't seem to work. Am I doing something wrong or is this feature not available?

Hey there, Christina! 👋

If you insert a step by step slide, it becomes the slide background, so it would override any slide masters and themes. There wouldn't be a customization option since it'll need to match slide to slide to keep the screen recording action.

If I understand the goal correctly – one idea can be to conduct the screen recording at a smaller size than your story size, so that there is some 'border' space within the background where you could place another shape or title.

Let me know if that helps! I'll be standing by, and I'm also happy to take a look at your .story file!

Hi Katie,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, you've understood my goal and it does look like what I want to do just isn't possible. :-(

The screen recording is indeed just a portion of the screen so there is a white area above and below. I'm currently formatting the background colour, adding a title shape, an instructions text box (as the built-in ones don't match the look) and a customized hint button plus corresponding layer. I was hoping not to have to do that individually on each and every slide (some simulations have over 100 slides...) but rather to use a master slide which already has the background, the hint button and layer and placeholders for the title and instructions.

So it looks like I really have to do that manually? *sobs*

The step by step slides are basically just a means of getting all the right screengrabs from the video rather than having to save and insert each on individually, so I guess at least I'm saving time there.
