I'm new to Storyline and have a quick question, if I insert a data entry field into my course, is there a limit to the amount of characters that can be stored when the user enters their answer? Since we will be using them for the user to store there answers to various questions posed throughout the course (although I am aware of the Short Answer and Essay screens too).
I haven't seen anything about a limit to the amount of characters within a data entry field, although I haven't tried to stress it and see how far it would go either. Depending on spacing, and how much you would want them to include the short answer and Essay screens may provide you some more built in text box real estate.
Yeah I thought about the short answer and essay screens but these are limited to one per page right? The thing I'm building might have a few sections per page for users to enter their responses. I'll test it out, hopefully it won't strain the LMS too much :D
Yes - they're limited to one per page, and also I just saw that the character count for an essay question is set at 5,000 characters max which is probably the same for data entry.
I'm trying to build an interaction where I want to show feedback based on the number of characters entered by learners in the text entry field. Say for instance, I allow a learner to type in a username and want to provide specific feedback if the username consists less than 8 characters.
I'm trying to find a way to achieve this in Storyline. Any ideas?
The limit is probably going to be you LMS, an essay question allows 5000 characters but the scorm limit for 1.2 is 4096, this is compressed but still too much text may break the resume function.

Hi Phill,
I'm actually trying to get the count of characters entered into the text entry box (text variable) and use that as a condition (on clicking the submit button), to provide feedback.
Are those links you provided still valid? The hyperlink takes me to a blank page and the file download just fills the webpage with random characters...I'm using IE11. I'm interested to see what additional functionality can be added to Articulate using JavaScript.
Hi Phil! Thanks for your example! It did help me to limit the characters of a data entry field. I looked carefully to your code, and I do not understand why you have the 1st line there (see below). Is it doing something? Everything else is clear.
Thanks for reaching out here, and you may want to contact Phil directly using the "contact me" button on his profile. He's still a regular in the forum threads but I don't know if he's subscribed to this thread.

Do you think this is doable in Storyline?

You could do it using javascript
here is a demo

Hi Samarpan! Looks like Phil has you taken care of here. Just let us know if you need anything further.
Thanks Phil!
Phil-
Is there anyway you can do a quick Screenr on the demo you did? When I click on the link, I am taken to Twitter, not the demo. Let me know.
Thanks
E
Hi Evan I changed the link to a twitter poster but this one does count the characters using the same javascript.
I will try and get a Screenr done but i am really busy until next week, sorry

Hi, Phil.
Never mind, I found what I was looking for in another post: http://www.articulate.com/support/storyline/javascript-best-practices-and-examples
Thank you!
Glad that you were able to find the information that you needed Brandon and thanks for sharing as well.
Very helpful, thanks for the javascript demo Phil!
Glad this older thread helped Val, and let us know if you need anything else.

var player = GetPlayer();

Hi Ash,
Sure thing, I did think about that. Only commented here, b/c other people could have the same question :) Thanks!
Sorry don't think I was subscribed to this, that line is part of the best practices for using inside of a storyline course

Gotcha!!
Have there been any developments in a way to limit characters in a data entry field in 360? Or a way to do this in JavaScript? Thank you.
Hi Brian - Sounds like this thread may have what you are looking for.
Thanks, Leslie!
Clarissa, you said you were able to limit the number of characters of a data entry field. How were you able to do this?
