Default Theme

May 19, 2013

We are having trouble with a custom theme we want to import to Storylline.   We can bring it in to Storyline ok, but it does not act the same way as the preset designs.  We can't switch back and forth between it or save it as the default.

Has anyone else had trouble with custom themes?   Is there a setting we might be missing?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm having the same problem as Amy. I've created a custom slide master, with its own colour and font themes, and saved it as a .athm file to my C drive.

When I open a new project, I can add the theme to the slide master, but I can't set it as a default theme for subsequent new projects. I've tried right-clicking the theme but the 'default' option does not appear (see attached screenshot) even though the tutorial on slide masters said it would.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Drew and welcome to Heroes!

What steps are you following to import it as a new theme and apply it to your Storyline file?

This tutorial describes how you can set up your own themes, and apply them to a Storyline file.

You can change the default theme for new Storyline projects at any time. Here's how:

  1. Open an existing Storyline project or create a new one.
  2. Go to the Design tab.
  3. Right-click the theme that you want to be the default, and select Set as Default Theme.

Hi there Ed! That video was really helpful, thank you!

When you make changes to a design theme (for example, colors or fonts), Storyline saves the changes in the current project. Before you close Storyline, do this:

  1. Go to the Design tab on the ribbon and click the Themes drop-down gallery.
  2. Choose Save Current Theme at the bottom of the list.
  3. Enter a name for your custom theme and click Save.

Then, when you open a new instance of Storyline, you can bring back the custom theme you created by doing this:

  1. Go to the Design tab on the Storyline ribbon and click the Themes drop-down gallery.
  2. Choose Browse for Themes at the bottom of the list.
  3. Browse to the custom theme file and click Open.

Let me know if that helps!

Thank you.

All of that works well and makes sense.

The process that doesn't seem to make sense or doesn't work is the "Set as Default Theme".  If I right click on the customized theme I've saved and then select "Set as Default Theme", my thought process is that when I start a new project, this would be the theme used by all of the slides that will be created in that, and all new projects.  The "Default Theme".

I believe this is the question the original posters are asking and what I've demonstrated in my video.

Make sense?

Thanks for digging into this.  I have a follow-up question.  How can I delete or edit the "This Project" theme?  I have a custom theme I'm using throughout my project but Storyline seems to have created a theme that's named after one of my slide master slides, and called it the theme for "This Project".  I'm working with other people and so don't want them to accidentally use the This Project theme because it's not the right one.  thanks for any help you can give.  The attached screenshot shows the Project Theme at top that I want to get rid of, and the custom theme I want to use below it.

Hello Laurel,

Sorry to hear that you've run into an issue with this.

Design > Colors > Right Click does not allow you to delete? Are you using Storyline in Administrator mode?

Do you have other windows open? If the color scheme is in use you may not be able to delete.

Do ou have a .story file that you'd like us to take a look at?
