Delay with quiz

Sep 17, 2012

Hi,

I´ve created a couple of quizzes in Storyline and published in an LMS.

The problem is that there is a 3-4 seconds delay after each question, from the time you click the Submit button until the Correct/Incorrect answer appears.

Is there anything I could do before publishing to prevent that?

We have also noticed that we didn´t have this problem in our trialversion of Storyline. The Quizzes we created there, works without any problem. Is there a difference in the trial version and the sharp one?

Good Morning Karin, and welcome to Heroes!

This blog post is a great place to start with most LMS issues.  I recommend starting there, as well as ensuring that you are following these instructions when publishing the project for your LMS.

If these resources don't help, I would recommend sharing more information with community regarding your scenario.  For example:

  1. What LMS and version are you using?
  2. What LMS Output Format are you using during publishing?
  3. What publishing options are you using?  ...HTML5?  ...Mobile Player?  ...offline viewing?  ...all?  ...none?
  4. What device, browser, and version are you using to test your content?  ...Chrome 21 on Windows 7?  ...Safari 6.0 on OS X 10.8?  ...Safari on iPad 3?
  5. Consider sharing your .story file and/or your zipped LMS output with the community for testing.

Please let us know if you need anything else.  Thanks!

Good Morning and Thank You!

I managed to narrow down the problem to the Result Slide

If I leave that out, every question works fine, but then I don´t have the result tracked in the LMS, so what to do?

Here are some answers to your questions:

1.       We use an LMS called Desire2Learn version 10.1

2.       We have tried with both 2004 and 1.2 since the LMS handles both

3.       We tried all kinds of combinations with the same result

4.       We tried Internet Explorer 9, Chrome and Firefox – all latest version

5.       I uploaded two version of a very short quiz, one without the Result slide (= no delay when you click submit) and one with the Result slide (=Delay)
In this test I also made a note of how the settings are when I publish and also the settings on the result slide

Good Morning, Karin.

When you worked your way through this blog post, I'm sure you stumbled across Step 3:  Confirm in SCORM Cloud.

With SCORM Cloud as an industry-standard testing tool, this is an important step for determining whether the problem is with your Articulate Story or with your LMS.

If you test your content in SCORM Cloud and find that the delay occurs, I recommend submitting a Support Case and including a copy of your .story file.

On the other hand, if you test your content in SCORM Cloud and find that all is well, I would recommend opening up a ticket with your LMS provider.

Please let us know if you need anything else.  Thanks!

Hi!

One thing that could be happening is that you have the quiz is set up to submit each question one at a time (this is the default).

When things are set that way, each time the submit button is clicked, data is sent to the LMS and processed and then returned to Storyline.  This can cause the 3-4 second delay.

I'm working on a project now for a client and I see it all the time.  For this project, the delay is acceptable (more like a two-second delay here).

You may want to try submitting all your quiz questions to the LMS all at once:  http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/submitting-answers-all-at-once.aspx

Or else get the LMS to be quicker and responsive--however, that's usually a tougher solution to implement.

Hi

And thanks for your answers!!!

@ Justin, we never tried the SCORM cloud, so we´re going to try it and if the delay is still there, I`ll submit a support case.

@Gerry, we need to give feedback on each question, that´s why we chose submit after each question. I saw the other tutorial and we tried that one as well, but then we ended up with a delay about 18 seconds when submitting so that was no option. I better talk to the LMS-vendor again and see if they can do anything, but first I´ll try what Justin suggested

Thank you so much for the suggestions and feedback!

Hi Karin, did you ever figure out what was causing this issue?

I've run into the exact same issue. Running the assessment on Scormcloud gives instant feedback, whereas on our LMS, a delay occurs when you click the submit button. This delay varies in length from 4 seconds to 10 seconds and up.

Setting the assessment to submit all questions at once made no difference, as the next button then causes the delay. There are about 10 or so calls that are occurring to the lms for each question, and I have no idea how to reduce that number. It seems that this is where the delay is coming in. The interaction between the assessment and the lms/database.

Desperately trying to figure out why our LMS is "unhappy" with the information it's receiving from the assessment, while the scormcloud platform works flawlessly.

Good Morning Chuck, and welcome to Heroes!

Can you reproduce the problem in SCORM Cloud?

If you test your content in SCORM Cloud and find that the delay occurs, I recommend submitting a Support Case and including a copy of your .story file.

On the other hand, if you test your content in SCORM Cloud and find that all is well, I would recommend opening up a ticket with your LMS provider.

Please let us know if you need anything else, and have a great day!

Hi

One comment, we talked to our LMS-provider and they found out that for every question there where about 14 “calls” to report the submission to the LMS, 14 things about each question and the user´s interaction that are captured and posted back to the database.

We couldn´t find any way to work around that so we can´t use Storyline when we want to post a Quiz in the LMS(, but we found other ways to use Storyline beside the quizzes).

Regards

Karin

The issue isn't in the SCORM cloud.  We did upload the file to you in the past but you didn't see any issues.  However our LMS doesn't seem to have this issue with Studio/Quizmaker files.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for this discussion. I am having similar situation with the delay when learner select the answer and click on the submit button with the correct answer.

The delay happen after the response to learner that the answer is correct on the pop up window.

The problem is that I have created another quizzes before and it works find with the same setting. I am not sure why this one is having issue and I cannot figure it out.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Nur,

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand you're experiencing a delay when the learner clicks submit with the correct answer. I'd like to ask you a few clarifying questions to start!

  • Does the delay occur when you preview the course or when published to LMS?
  • If you've published to LMS, have you tried testing the course in SCORM Cloud?
  • It's important to know that the other quizzes you created have worked as expected! Have you tried importing your slides into a new Storyline file?

If you need further assistance with this, can you please share your project file so we can investigate further? You can upload it here or privately in a support case! We'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete.
