Deleted Layers

Aug 03, 2016

I published my SL file.  Then I deleted (accidentally) two layers on one slide with narration.  Is there any way to get them back?

Without a previous version then importing will not work.

If you use Dropbox or Google Drive or in fact any cloud based storage solution you could restore a previous version.

Other wise you will need to rebuild the layer, you should be able to find the audio file in the published folder, it will have been renamed to a random name.

Hi Kendra,

If you don't have a backup of the actual project file saved from before those changes were made, you may be able to find an older version in your temp files and then import the slide from that one into the version you're editing in. Here's how to check your temp files:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project and look for a version from before you made that change. Copy that one to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story. You may also want to change the file name as well so that you don't confuse it with the current version you're working on.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline and check to see if that slide is in tact in that version. If it is, you can import that slide into your current version.

There isn't a way to get it from the published output. If you're not able to locate it in an older temp version then you may, unfortunately, have to rebuild that slide.

Depending on how your system is set up, sometimes you can go to this folder C:\Users\walt.hamilton\AppData\Roaming\Articulate\Storyline. If you are lucky, you might find a .tmp file with the right name. Change the extension from.tmp to .story, and it will be an old version of your story.

For the future, a general rule of thumb in the computer world is to ask yourself the "should I make a backup now?" question. That question sounds like this:" "If I were to come back tomorrow and find my computer had lost all my work since my last backup, would I be upset?" That is the answer to "should I make a backup?". In SL, save your work, then before you close, do a Save AS, with a new name that includes the word backup and a number. I've never known anybody that really suffered serious problems from having too many copies of their work, but too few copies...
