Well that is very strange indeed. Ok try locking and hiding the text boxes on the timeline first and then try again. Sometimes it is a little tricky when objects are sitting on top of one another.

just select it and press the delete key on your keyboard.
I tried that but instead it deleted the text boxes that are underneath it.

What if it was a screen shot? Is that deletable? I think that is what happened.
You should be able to delete a screen shot. Did you insert it on the slide master by any chance?
Can you post your .story file here (or at least a subset with the image on it) (use the paper clip to upload)
