.des file extension?

I recently noticed that Box.com doesn't allow files with the extension .des to be uploaded automatically. When I publish to LMS within Storyline 2, however, a file is created named course.des.
I've sent off a request for Box.com to allow the file but in the interim I'm just curious, how critical is this file?
I'm assuming 'des' is short for description but is it basic enough, structurally speaking, that I could keep a copy of it in a .doc format and then recreate if needed in the event of a system failure?

I believe the DES file is the descriptor file and contains information about every course element in the course so it's quite important. Saving the published .zip file uploaded to an LMS separately in Box might be a solution, and good practice, even if it increases your file storage needs.
Thanks for the tip on uploading as a .zip Brian! Deep down I knew that would work but hadn't thought of it. I'll just be sure to produce the archive for backup purposes going forward. Cheers!
