How do I add my design to a freeform questions (drag and drop) without using a template? By design, I mean, the colour that I want, etc. The only thing, I have been able to change is the font, font colour and the font size. What if I would like a hover state, with a different colour and then a selected state, etc? How do I customize the questions to my branding and design?

You mentioned customizing a hover state. You can click on an object, then go to the States panel to add and edit each state. When you click on the Edit States button, you can then select the Hover state and change it to your preferred color of choice! Hope this helps point you in the right direction!
