Designing a questionnaire to Identify a user's profile

We need to develop a questionnaire that will help users identity their profile. There is 6 profiles in total. What would be the best way of designing such questionnaire?

Initially we thought of asking set of questions, and depending on an answer a user will collect points under certain profiles. Once they collect majority of points under a profile, this profile is assigned to them.  The problem is that all users in such case would need to go through all questions, and that will be quite a lot of them. 

Another problem is that a user may be collecting similar number of points for, let's say two profiles, and in that case how do we go about that? We can add an extra question for each combination but that will be a lot of extra questions!  

I am curious if anyone else designed a questionnaire with similar logic and could provide some useful hints.
