Disable menu items

Nov 27, 2013

Hello, I am looking for a way to disable menu items until a score of 100% is received in the prior section.  I have 8 sections, if a users receives 100% in a section then that section becomes live, until that happens that section would be grayed out.

Hi Rob,

Are you using a custom menu or the built in one for Storyline? If you're using the built in menu, you can have it display but allow the learner to control it by:

1. Clicking Player

2. Clicking the menu tab at the top

3. Click the additional options gear near the bottom of the window.

4. Click on the Navigation Restriction drop-down and change to either restricted or locked

You'll see the steps described here in the tutorial Customizing the Player Menu and I've included a portion below:

When the Additional Options window appears, use the Navigation Restriction selector to choose one of the following:

  • Free: This allows learners to click on the titles in the course's menu to navigate to any part of the course at any time. They can view whatever slides they wish, in any order.
  • Restricted: This means learners can view the current slide and any slide they've previously viewed, but they can't use the menu to jump ahead or skip over slides.
  • Locked: This means learners can only view the slides in the order you've designed. They can't use the menu to jump ahead or skip over slides, nor can they use it to skip back to any previously viewed slides.

You may also want to look into setting the option to Auto-collapse menu as learner progresses

If you're looking to further restrict the users progression through the course, and only allow them to proceed after meeting certain criteria, you may want to review this method to disable the next button until the user meets all the conditions.
