Disabling Print Screen or other keyboard keys

Oct 29, 2018

We have a problem with our students taking screen shots of the quizzes and tests. Is there anyway to disable the keyboard keys of control and/or print screen when published for a LMS? We do have multiple questions in our item banks, but our students are determined...

"randomising the order of the questions and making it so these are randomly taken from a large pool of possible questions (e.g. you have 100 questions but 10 are drawn randomly from that pool so everyone sees different questions in a different order)."

I understand how to use an item bank, thanks...you are correct it is a behavior issue. We have tried six ways to sunday to correct that, to no avail. We have made all eLearning quizzes "low stakes" tests. But we are always hoping for tech to catch up with sneaky adult learners ;) For "high stakes" tests we use a controlled environment with proctors.

Hi Darlene,

I'd agree with Matthew and Nancy that using a really large question bank, and only pulling a set number of questions is the best way to handle those students sharing pictures or images of their answers. You could also look at disabling the feedback so that they don't know what's correct/incorrect and only display a score on the final results page.

You mentioned you're hosting this in an LMS, and there is a great, comprehensive article here on the security of SCORM. It's a long article, but the crux of it is, if you need 100% complete security you'll need a proctor for the exam.

Since the beginning of testing, there's been cheating, and there will continue to be. With that in mind, you may want to look at other question types that allow users to demonstrate their knowledge vs. ability to guess and copy another learner.

If you hear of any technological improvements that can help in this area, please let us know! We're always interested in adapting and adding new features to support your course development.
