Disappearing Objects with Insert of Button

Mar 13, 2015

Hi all!

New to Storyline. I've seen similar threads on the issue I am experiencing but can't put my finger on the solution.  I have a slide with many objects each with triggered actions and state changes, as well as variables.

Everything works fine until I insert a button to  navigate back to the introduction of the project.  As soon as I insert the button, the objects will disappear when a variable dependent triggered action occurs.  Remove the button, everything works fine again.

How can I get around this... I am in need of a mechanism for the user to get back tot he introductory slide which serves as an interactive table of contents.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Kevin!

Another option for this  is to use the built in Visited state and add the checkmark. this will change it automatically without using a trigger.

Also, when you use the built in hover state, you do not need to use a trigger either. This will happen automatically as well.

Attached is a sample file. Just an idea :)

Thanks Leslie,  I do see that will fix the issue.  However, I'm not sure why from a logic perspective adding the button causes rectangles to behave as such, and why we then have to intervene to fix the unintentional behavior.  It certainly seems like they are doing something they shouldn't be.  Also, I will have upwards of 70 instances of using rectangles in this fashion which means I will have to add in 70 additional conditional triggers to correct the issue...  At least I know I can work around the issue if needed, but is this the optimal fix?

Thanks Emily! It would certainly be easier to use the built in visited state.  One reason I was working with variables to track completed slides/sections is to facilitate completion criteria.  In other words, some slides are required, some are optional.   The participant must complete all of the required slides to successfully complete the course.   I was hoping variables will allow me to accomplish this, but would certainly be interested if there is another/easier way.

Thanks so much for the support, it is much appreciated!

Hi Kevin!

You could still use variables to keep track of the required slides. Are you going to allow a button of sort to allow an exit of the course once the required slides are viewed? You could have that set to appear only when all the variables are met, or you could also have it appear when the states of those slide Buttons (from your slide 2.1) are set to visited.

I am sure others will jump in with other ideas as well!

Yep, that's what I was thinking Emily.  I plan to build in an inactive greyed out button on the TOC that only "activates" once all chapters are marked as complete which will be dependent on all required slides being visited.  I see this can be done by including conditions of object states.... which does have me leaning towards using the visited states approach.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
