Displaying slide duration IS possible ! but how ?

Sep 30, 2014

Hi,

I've been struggling 2 weeks now to figure out how to display slide duration on my player.

I've read posts about this, and no matters what some may think, this IS a pedagogical tool , very useful for the learner.

I've tried things that don't seem to work.(Or really i'm crap) .. (is that proper english ? )

However, in the community page of Elearning Heroes, there is an example which shows a perfect player WITH slide duration (even if there are layers in the project, which is the case of my project), and which still enables the user to move forward or backward and use the player usual features.(not read only it seems)

Here is the example : http://demos.articulate.com/showcase/Avoid-Death-by-Elearning/player.html

Can someone please help me to figure out how to do that!! this is the reguirement of the teachers i work for and they are starting to get nervous about this option not available ready yet :-)

Please help !!!

Estelle, would displaying a static slide duration meet the need for your teachers?  Something like adding the total slide duration in parentheses after the slide title or something?

I've seen more elaborate work arounds to actually show a progress meter, etc., if you'd like to put some work into something like that it should be doable as well.

hi Brian,

Thanks for your help, yes, displaying a static slide duration would meet the requirements of my teachers. The idea is to give an idea to the students of how long each session will take.

How can i do that ? Will i need to do it for each slide ? (because i have 10 projects of about 50 slides each (and i don't even count the layers )

Low tech options are my favorite

Option 1:

In our LMS, we always include course duration in the course description, allowing students to see how long the course is before they start it.  This has enabled us to move from Studio (with the slide duration) to Storyline (with no slide duration) without not a single complaint from our students.  Knowing the total course duration up front is enough, no need to tell them how long each slide is.

Option 1b:

In addition to having the course duration in the course description, you could also include the course duration in your course title, possibly in parentheses at the end of the course name.  Example: Advanced Excel (25 minutes).

Option 2:

Add the slide duration to the slide title of each slide in your course.  Total slide duration including layers.  You can add this for each slide in the Menu settings under Player settings.  You should be able to do this effectively if you're using the table of contents menu in Storyline.  Then the students will be able to see your estimated duration for each slide in the course menu.  Example below...

Option 3:

Look at some options for including course progress meters here in the community (there are tons of them) and consider adapting something that would work on a slide level, although this would be a high level of effort.  Here's one example - http://community.articulate.com/forums/t/33003.aspx

Hope this helps...
