I have created a custome Menu that will "fly in" from the side using a button on the screen. When the user selects a topic, I want the "topic" text color to change to indicate that they have visited this topic. I have tried both "visited and selected" states on this layer and the color does not change.
When I do the same on the base layer, it works fine. Is this a problem with layers?
Yes. That was my attempt, however, since I wrote I found another entry where someone created a way to track their TOC by using variables. it was a little time consuming, but I did get it to work. Thank you!

Are these elements set up on a slide master layer? If so, you can't change the state of objects on the slide master layer as described here.
