Drag and Drop - Retry feedback

May 30, 2013

I am not sure what setting I have wrong, but I have a drag and drop question set to 2 attempts.  But it seems that if the learner gets the first attempt incorrect, the green checkmarks and red x's appear on each drag item onscreen anyway.  Can I have those visual indicators not show up until the second attempt is also incorrect?

Hi Christine,

I am actually using a drag and drop template that I may have gotten from storyline!  But the issue seems to happen even on a freeform slide. And I just noticed that when I go to reposition the labels to new locations for my second try the little check marks and such disappear, which is strange as well!

I have attached a storyline file that shows this.

Hi Gordon,

Ah-hah! I see what you mean now :) Thank you very much for the file.

For the green checks and red incorrect marks, these are actually states for the drop objects:

If you don't want to see these at all, you could remove the states or edit them so they don't display the additional correct and incorrect marks.

If you like them, and want to keep them, you could simply add some triggers that would reset the states when the user is returned to the question slide. To do this, open the "Try Again" layer and select the "Try Again" button. Add a new trigger that changes the state of the labels/drag objects to "Normal" when the user clicks. You can copy and paste this trigger and set it for each individual object.

Now, when the user clicks "Try Again" on their first attempt, it should reset the states. If they try a second time and receive the "Incorrect" feedback, the states will still display the green and red marks.

I went ahead and set this up in the file you shared. I'm attaching it, just in case you'd like to see how this works.

Let me know if this works for you :)

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

Thanks for the quick response. Your solution didn’t really do what I wanted. The correct states still show behind the retry message. (see attached image) I suppose there are complicated ways to do this, such as a drop correct/incorrect state based on a variable that counts number of tries first, or some such thing.

But I also suppose I may also want to submit this as a feature request? Articulate should be smart enough to not show correct/incorrect choices until the number of attempts requested have been reached.

Hi Gordon,

It really has nothing to do with the way Storyline handles this type of interaction - this is the way the template you're using is set up :)

If you're not crazy about the way it works, it might be best to build your own interaction or objects.

So, what exactly do you want to happen then? You don't want them to show up at all after they click submit? If you do want them to show up, do you only want them to show up at a specific point?

If you can give me some specifics, I'll take another look and see how we can set this up for you.

Thanks!

Christine
