Drag-and-Drop Variable Value Issue

Dec 29, 2020

I am creating a survey where each question offers provides four answers and the learner must rank them (1-4) as they apply to themselves. Then the values are totaled and a final result is presented.

The issue I am facing is duplicate values being added when the learner changes their answer on any given question. For example, if they rank one answer with a four (4), but change their mind to three (3), the end results slide is registering seven (7) and changing the results.

Is there a way to only register the final value present when the learner clicks the next button?

Hello Sheldon!

I'm happy to help! After looking at your file, I do not see a Results Slide or additional variables. However, the Sequence Drag and Drop question score is set to By Question, which means the score is sent when the user clicks submit.

If you've already added a Results Slide and additional variables to the file, would you mind sharing the updated project with us?

Hi Lauren! I'm sorry, I think I may have uploaded the incorrect Storyline file. Hopefully, this will make more sense!

One option we've toyed with is disabling the squares when dropped, so each score will only be added once, but that takes away the ability to change your answer if you make a mistake.

I think you nailed it, Sheldon. Without changing your design, I'd recommend a few changes and included them in the attached file:

  1. Trigger to disable state of 'number' when dropped on a letter.
  2. Button for the option to reset/retry.
  3. Adjust slide properties to reset to initial state to reset the attempt.
  4. Split the variables per question so that these can be reset as well (trigger on retry button).
  5. Create a 'total' variable for each letter and add these up on the Result Slide.
