Drag item into more than one target to be correct

Oct 05, 2014

I believe this should be a basic function of a drag and drop question as all of the other major  e-learning applications can do it.

I have a question that requires a user to drag five items into five areas.

2 are called "Needed"

3 are called "Ignore"

The problem is because I cannot set it up so that the user can drag either of the Needed boxes into either of the Needed Target areas, which would be correct, the user will get an incorrect response.

Is there a workaround, until, I really expect, this feature to be add?

Hi Darren,

You've said you'd like to be able to "set it up so that the user can drag either of the Needed boxes into either of the Needed Target areas (my bold)."

I created an instructional video a while back where I address this issue. The trick is to create a Freeform Pick One quiz. There's also a link on the video page to a link where you can download a sample story.

Hi Darren

what version of SL are you using?  I do this interaction quite often, where I have two drop targets and a list of items to drag.  Not sure I understand why you have five drop targets instead of just the two 'Needed and Ignore'?

Each of the 5 drag items need to be dragged to a different section of a technical diagram.

I checked out the video tutorial, thank you.

I will have to look at it a few times as it does seem to be a long way round to getting it done.

Just wondering, if the tutorial was created to answer the request by users, why has it not been provided in Storyline 2 as a function in the drag and drop free-form option?

Ok, I have spent a bit of time this morning getting the Pick One option to work and so it seems to work, to a point.

When a user selects the incorrect options, and they are given the option to to try again, the dragged items remain in the chosen positions.

How can I get the drag items to reset back again so a user can try it again?

I have also noticed this in the Drag and Drop option, the dropped items stay where they are when a user tries again,. They have to drag them back to the original positions to start again.

Hi All,

Marta, tx for providing the link to that instructional video .

Darren, regarding your question from 10/6:

"...Just wondering, if the tutorial was created to answer the request by users, why has it not been provided in Storyline 2 as a function in the drag and drop free-form option?" ...

... staff would have to answer that. I will say, though, that an implementation that we non-programmers (and of course I don't know if you ARE a programmer ;)) see as simple may actually be complex. And, there are so many things we'd like to see implemented. You could submit a feature request so that your voice would be heard.

Please shout out again if you have more questions.

This was a very helpful thread!  One minor thing I would like to add is that you could also apply a miniscule motion path (not set to relative start point!) to each drop item and trigger them to move on those paths if the learner gets the answer incorrect.  This would essentially reset the field.  This is a helpful alternative if you have a long intro on the slide or a bunch of other stuff happening that you don't want to repeat by resetting the slide to its original state.  Thanks again!
