Drop down menus

Nicole Leagult made an oustanding video on drop down menus. I have  used the video on creating a dropdown menu in Storyline several times to create a great looking drop down menu .

My quesiton is that my menus work perfectly but I would like them to change to a selected state once they are viewed. I have the user return to the menu slide for the next drop down menu item after the timeline ends on each of the targeted slides. I would like to have know how to change the once visited menu item to a different color (selected state) after the user has viewed the targeted slide.

I have placed triggers in each of the layers to change the state and it works when  you view the menu slide by itself but when you view the entire scene upon returned to the menu slide from the targeted slide, the selected state is not there.

Can this be done?
