Duplicating selected state of a check button

May 12, 2014

I want to create a new state for a button based on the existing selected state. So I Edit States > Highlight selected > Click the duplicate button. This process is fine apart from the fact that the check isn't duplicated. I then thought to save the checked button as an image but when I did this the button saved with a different font from the one used in the Story (I think it defaulted to Articulate font)...

I suppose I could use an image  of a tick/check to cover the box in the duplicated selected state which would work in this context but it seems like an unnecessary workaround?

Anyone else had this problem or got any other ideas how to duplicate the selected state?

Hi Greg and Anun,

You should be able to duplicate the state and keep the elements - but it will need to have a new state name, as you can't have two states with the same name as Storyline would not know which one to use.

In regards to your "checkmark" you've inserted it originally as an image or as just standard text using the symbol? I'd like to try this on  my own set up and want to follow your process - or if you're able to share the .story file or that one slide with me I'm happy to take a look.

Hi Ashley,

Well yes I thought that if you duplicated the 'selected' state and gave it a new name 'selected2' for instance that the new state would keep the same check mark that is in the initial 'selected' state. But it doesn't.

What happens is that in the thumbnail of the state it looks as if the mark will appear in the check box in the new state but in the main slide the mark does not appear. I've tried this a few times now with the same results so I don't think I'm going mad, unless whenever you duplicate a state you are simply duplicating the normal state??

I just used the standard check button  - Insert > Button > Check box

Thanks for your help.

Hi Greg and Anum,

Ok - I did a quick test to see if I could replicate this, and here are the steps I went through:

1. Added a regular button

2. Edited the states to add a "Selected" state - as it's not automatically created.

3. I added a checkmark shape (from Insert-> shape ->Checkmark) to the "selected" state

4. I tested out that version and the checkmark appears when I click on it.

5. I then went back and duplicated the "Selected" state and called it "Selected2" - the checkmark was still there.

6. To test out if I could see the new state's checkmark when previewing I changed the color of it, and added a trigger to change the state to "selected2" when clicked - all worked as expected.

If I'm not understanding your set up or it's behaving differently than my example, can you share a .story file here with us?

Hi Ashley,

I see what you've done there - used a 'regular' button. I'm talking about the actual check mark button option - the one with the little square box and space for some text - like a radio button but square! Perhaps the check button has been designed to act differently or to be used for a different purpose than the 'regular' buttons? Or perhaps it's a bug?!

Thanks for looking in to it for me though!

Greg

Hi Greg,

Thanks for clarifying - as it seems that the crucial element is that type of button. I tried that on my own, and duplicating the "selected" state of a Check mark button does show me the same behavior as you described. As I looked further into this, it seems that it's by design - as the original selected state would be the only one with the check mark included although it is confusing that you can still see the check mark while looking at the states in the panel. You can duplicate the Normal state, add a check mark to it and use that as the selected state which would allow you to have more control over how the check mark looks.

Sorry to have misunderstood your original set up!
