You could use variables on the first slide to track which image the user has selected. Then on the other slides you put all the potential images in their hidden state and trigger one of them to state change when timeline starts on the slide and add a condition refering to the variable
e.g change state of x to normal when timeline starts if pic1==true
Here is a quick sample file that lets you make a choice on the first slide. On the remaining slides, triggers are used to change the state of an object according to the previous selection. Hope that makes sense.

I think I've understood your question correctly.
