Edit Invalid Answer Layer
Apr 05, 2017
I have asked a similar question before, but I don't think I asked it correctly.
I have a course which has multiple interactions for the learner. For each type, I need a slightly different "Invalid Answer" response if they try to bypass the activity:
1. You must answer the question before submitting.
2. You must complete the activity before submitting.
3. You must click "I agree" before submitting.
I know there is no way to enter multiple responses in the InvalidAnswerText field (# 22) of the Aa Text Labels section of the Player. But is there a way to access the layer itself to change the wording there? When creating a quiz slide, I have access to the Correct, Incorrect and Try Again layers. The Invalid Answer layer seems to be hidden.
Is there any way to access this layer?

Hi Christopher
see if this sample slide helps you - it involves adding a trigger to the submit interaction to stop the default invalid answer message popping up
Thanks Wendy. I tried this, but the default Invalid answer layer is still showing. Is there a way to turn that off? Or to have the newly created layer show above it?
Hi Christopher
It's not showing up in my sample - did you add the conditions on the submit interaction trigger?
I didn't add the conditions to "Submit interaction". That was the missing piece. It's working now. Thanks a bunch!
Does anybody know - at the DNA level, is there a way to get our hands on the default invalid layer?
Hi Walt,
The "invalid" message isn't a layer that's accessible - you can only update or edit the text associated with it from the player text labels. I won't be shocked if someone has found a way around that in Storyline, so hopefully they're able to share here with you!
Hi Ashley and Wendy,
this is working for multiple choice/selection questions, but how about drop and match questions? I am stuck with not showing the customized layer when learners don't choose answer options and click submit buttons.
Hi Junko
can you share the slide and which version of SL are you using?
Hi Wendy,
Thank you for your reply.
I am using Storyline 3.
Sorry that I can't share the slide itself, but adding the screenshot of trigger which is working for multiple choice questions.
I created variables for counting the number of hovering on the drop-match answer options. There are 5 drop-and-matches in the slide. But this did not work as well.
Hi Junko
sorry I only have SL360 but because you can't access the dropdown objects on the timeline like you can access the radio buttons / checkboxes on other types of questions I don't think this can be done. The built in Invalid answer layer should be displaying if the user clicks Submit without answering, could you customise the inbuilt Invalid answer popup?
Here are the object names in the player if you can to modify the popup
Thank you so much, Wendy for detailed info!
So it is possible to edit the text of the default pop-up, but not the design, correct?
Hi Junko
text and colours can be changed but not the size unfortunately. Hope that helps
Thank you very much, Wendy!
Glad that Wendy was able to help you out here Junko :)
