Editing button states

Feb 11, 2021

I've been trying to set up a trigger on a button (in a button set) that changes the state of the button itself to another shape when clicked. Storyline disliked the idea so much that it generated an error, caused a corruption in the story file and in my copy of Storyline itself (by passing an undeletable trigger that I'd attached to the button, onto any new Storyline project) so I had to uninstall and reinstall it. All I wanted to do was change a rectangle button's state to a chevron shape when it was clicked. Other attempts to change the state of a button (that's part of a button set) to another shape (such as a rectangular callout) results in an error. too.

This page https://community.articulate.com/series/articulate-storyline-360/articles/articulate-storyline-360-user-guide-how-to-add-and-edit-states#edit

says, about editing states: "You can add and edit text, add and remove objects, change position, adjust formatting, edit characters, and apply animations." So if you can edit characters – to another pose I assume – why can't you change a button state to another Shape? Is it only buttons in a button set that have this limitation? If so, the interface/workflow should prevent any such attempt.

Yes Goran, it looks like you may have the same problem. Mine was ultimately unsolvable.

Have you tried using (for Unlock and Check) a state closer to the Normal one, i.e. using your circular button with the padlock icon but changing only the colour of the button on the Trigger action and showing a text box with the number 3 and the star icon on separate triggers?

It seems best to avoid using states that are very different from the Normal state when triggers are involved.
