. . . maybe I have missed something but I need help with this problem. I cannot 'edit' any object on a timeline unless I turn off all others' visibility or move it to the top layer of timeline. Is this normal?
This does not sound like normal behavior. You should be able to click on an item and edit from the timeline. Please make sure that you are working locally as described here. Have you seen this on other files as well? You may want to review the steps listed here as well.

thanks for the reply Emily! I am working locally, and recently upgraded to
version 2 of SL including Update 4: 1501.717.
Any file I create, responds like this.
So, I guess I will continue working in this state. Thanks again!
Hi Diana!
You may want to run the repair steps in the link above in case something happened with your installation of the recent update.
Working on that now!
Thanks again,
Diana
