Embedded web videos
Apr 07, 2016
My query is related to this known issue:
OK, so I have my embedded video, I have put an invisible button in the Storyline slide over where the full screen button would appear that opens the video in a new browser tab. The issue is that when the video opens in a new tab, the instance of the video in the Articulate player continues to play. In trying to make it stop, I have put a trigger on the button that is supposed to pause the video, i.e. Pause media, Video on slide, User clicks, Button - that doesn't work. Then I tried returning the slide to it's initial state by including a trigger that does 'Jump to slide, Current slide, When user clicks, Button' and setting the slide to 'Reset to initial state' when revisiting - that doesn't work either.
Can anyone think of a solution that will make the video pause when the button is clicked? It has to be hosted online because the video might be amended and the link will always point to the most up to date version of the video. The video is hosted in Kaltura and uses a player from that software rather than the Articulate video controls.
Additionally, can anyone tell me what the difference might be between adding an online video as 'Video from Website' or as a Web Object please, I'm unsure of what the difference is.
Thanks for your help!

Paragraph 2, sentence 2 should read:
The issue is that when the video opens in a new tab, the instance of the video in the Articulate player continues to play.
Hi James!
You can set your video to launch in a new window without these extra settings.
The same could be done for web objects as well.
The difference in this case being do you want to embed an online video or do you simply want to point to a web url?
If you need us to take a look at your .story file, feel free to share.
I want the user to have the option between watching in the Storyline player and opening in a new window/tab. Some will be fine viewing it in the player, others will want to make the video full screen which requires opening in a new tab, it doesn't seem you can do it from the Storyline player.
Ah, well now your set-up questions make a bit more sense.
Another question - even if you set your video to load/play automatically - do you have to click the video in slide to play? If so, I think that is the issue you are running into as the user would have to click to pause the video and click to launch the full screen version. The triggers do not work the same as a limitation of the video hosting. It's what I'm seeing with Vevo actually in my testing.
They will have to click play to start the video, yes. I don't get why the triggers don't work whilst the video is playing. Even reloading the slide in it's initial state doesn't stop the video. Bizarre.
Thanks for your help Leslie. Are we saying this issue is unsolvable?

Hi, James -- Thanks for your question, and as Leslie is out of the office today, I thought I would try to stop in and help as best I can. If I am understanding what you'd like to accomplish correctly, unfortunately, I do not have any suggestions to share to make it work, but perhaps others in the community have additional insights to offer.
And please see the following articles on a Video from a Website (detailed in the 2nd section here), vs. Adding a Web Object. Hope that helps!
