Embedding documents for offline consultation in IPAD
Aug 29, 2013
Hello Storyline colleagues!
I am doing a proof of concept to demonstrate what can be done (or not) on iPad.
We have the requirement that material has to be all available OFFLINE. This means attachments cannot be linked to as web objects on internet or even intranet. This restriction exists since our people often are in zones where there are no connections. Once more restriction: locked down iPad WITHOUT Safari.
I have make numerous tests in the last days and could not find the way so see offline any document: tests were done with .doc, .pdf, .rtf, .tif, all on their own layer as web object with an index.html
For my online tests, I have used Mike's recipe for the index.html:
<object data="ipad_user_guide - extract_V2.pdf" type="application/pdf" width="100%" height="100%">
<p>It appears you cannot see the PDF file.
No biggie... you can <a href="ipad_user_guide - extract_V2.pdf">click here to
download the PDF file.</a></p>
</object>
...but iPad does not what do with it: .rtf, .doc and .tif files do not open and even if I click on "click here to open the file", nothing happens. I conclude IOS does not know how to interpret the html commands or it does know where to get the files.
However, the pdf file loads but only shows page 1 (I have seen this problem in another post, but no answer on how to fix this).
And when I turn the ipad offline and cut the wifi, no attachment or html message shows up.
As I need to be realistic, does this mean I should forget all attachments? I could upload the documents directly to iBooks, but then Storyline cannot link to that.
Has anyone succeeded to see more than 1 page of PDF as attachment? I have seen many posts saying yes, but no post mentioning a many pages pdf.
Am I restricted to scrollable and if so, how many pages can I hope for (last tests I could only do 2 pages)
All-any other suggestion are welcome as long as they respect the ipad restrictions (no jump to file) and our company restrictions (embed everything so that it can be seen offline and no safari).
I have seen a marvelous group of folks here, so I cross my fingers that I can get help on this post.
BTW, all is fine on the PC and online!
Have a great day
Louise

Louise,
Have you tried placing the PDF on a website and then inserting it's URL as a web object? I've tried this and the Mobile Player seems to handle it and allow scrolling.
Mike
Ahhh...I just saw your response to my post from earlier in the month about the firewall concerns with putting the PDF on your network servers.. Hmmm....
Yeah, I'm not sure how to get it to load locally like you're seeking. I'm thinking this might have to be a feature request.
Mike
Mike, how do we proceed to ask for features? Thks, Louise
Hi Louise! I just wanted to pop in and share the link so that you can submit your feature requests
This is an old thread and I've searched for recent remedies and haven't found anything. I too need to have a pdf viewable offline. I'm using Presenter. Any solutions yet? Thanks!
Hi Nicole! Looks like you reached out here as well, and I am not aware of a user that has shared a workable solution for me to share with you.
