Entrance failure

Apr 22, 2020

I have a graphic that I cannot get to come in on the slide and I cannot figure out why. I've tried everything I know. Can someone please see if you can recreate this issue. The graphic is supposed to fade in 1/2 seconds after the text appears. THANKS SO MUCH

Hi Sylvia,

Attached is my take on your problem. I set the initial state of the object to hidden and added a trigger to change state of the object to normal once the animation on the text box completes.

Seems to work, although I would probably increase the duration to give the animation more impact.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks so much Jan. I tried what you said and it does at least let the graphic appear, but there is absolutely no animation. It just pops in. I even tried using another graphic and I cannot get the animation to work and unless the graphic is set to come in WITH the text it does not come in at all and no animation . Thanks for the help. At least the graphic shows up :). IF I set the graphic to come in first on the timeline then the animations work. It is a total canundrum to me, but at least I can get it to show up. THANK YOU!

It appears that SL3 is stopping any animation in progress when any new item enters the slide or new animation begins. The spins stop mid cycle when a new animated text box enters if the animation is not completed before the next item enters and this is occuring now on all of the assets on the slide? Really strange. Here is another slide where the text "downward spiral" will not come in :(. I've tried removing the animations. It's just strange.

Hi Sylvia

I'm not running SL3 at the moment so can't test for you - but I did look at how the objects are appearing on the timeline.  Instead of moving them to the point on the timeline like you have, maybe try having them in an initial hidden state and then use triggers to bring them onto the slide (not sure if it will make a difference but maybe)

So state of the objects in the states tab would be 'hidden' then set trigger

Change state of Text 'let us pray' to normal when timeline reaches 2 seconds

Change state of image to normal when timelines reaches 3 seconds.

Hope that helps

Hi Sylvia,

Wendy's suggestions should indeed work, I checked on the story file you sent and see that you added several animations that trigger automatically in the timeline.

Try switching the durations to sync with how you want the events to happen on the slide. The timeline bar at the bottom of Storyline should guide you when the events would occur and you can move the objects on the timeline as needed. Adding conditional triggers always helps with creating a more immersive presentation such as having the text exit only after the learner clicks or swipes on the slide. That way it only moves when they've finished reading the text.

Here is the link to a great guide on using triggers if you choose to use them:

Guide to Triggers

Let me know if the graphics are still giving you trouble after switching them around in the timeline.

Thanks both of you. I will work on it, but the reality is this has never happened and I have done these types of animations with SL for years without issue. So what has changed? This is really frustrating because it is taking hours of time to try work arounds. These are basic animations and time sequences and it did not start happening until the last Windows or Parallels or SL updates. Not sure what triggered it.  Can either of you get them to work just as they are?

Sylvia Wright

I have tried switching them around. I have tried starting from hidden states.  So far the only thing that works is if they are at the same point on the timeline and even then the animations do not work :(. This has just started happening in the last couple of weeks. Until then everything has worked great.

Hi Sylvia

i can’t explain why they are not working just trying to give you a possible work around. Perhaps log a case with support and see if they can find the reason.

Sometimes I find when a new update comes out it can ‘break’’ or ‘change’ how things previously worked but I’m working in 360 so haven’t been following SL3 updates.
