Erratic Hover State Behavior

Dec 11, 2018

Alright everyone, I definitely need an E-Learning Hero. I've contacted Articulate Support for help with a real head-scratcher. In my published files, the hover states of icons are jumpy and erratic.

I have no idea how to fix it. I have tried adding hotspots, deleting and replacing the icons, and uninstalling and reinstalling Articulate Storyline 360. I'm working on the file on my local drive and have updated my Articulate Storyline.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please see the gif below for an example of what's happening:

 Hi Wendy,

In the gif example above, I had configured the slide with triggers and no hotspots. I have been trying the hotspots to see if that works and it hasn't.

Here is the .story file of the slide. Please note that I have stripped away the specific information bc of potential client concerns.

Hi Crystal,

Thanks for checking in! So I was able to find a workaround that is not graceful, but it is effective. I noticed that the hover state seemed to work when an icon was in a group, so I inserted a transparent rectangle over each icon and then grouped it with the icon. I then added the appropriate triggers so that the icon would reveal the layer, etc.

I am having the same issues as above. Does anyone know of a way I can set up a hover state to completely avoid the possibility of this issue without using the above workaround? At this point, I'm just going to redo the two buttons that have the problem completely.

One of the pictures on the buttons also becomes glitchy/corrupted-looking at random without changes to the slide of any kind. Sometimes it works, sometimes it looks like TV static, and sometimes it looks halfway in between--only in the preview; in the workspace it always looks fine.

However, I've noticed that if I copy and paste the image in question, it shows up as a completely different image (both from the content library) that I previously had on the slide but have deleted completely. I had my buttons as images with a hover state that was a solid shape of the same size with text on it, if that makes a difference. I hope that this info is helpful for fixing the bug.

Hi Kayleigh,

Since you're seeing this issue in Storyline preview, I have a hunch the problem is different than the bug Crystal mentioned earlier in this discussion.

With your permission, we can take a look at a copy of your slide to investigate what's happening. We'll delete it when we're done troubleshooting. If that works for you, you can upload your file privately to our support team here. We'll give it a test and let you know what we find!

Hi there, Nick. We just released update 6 for Storyline 3, which provides enhanced support for Google Chrome 72. Could you update Storyline 3 and let me know if that helps your glitchy state issue?

If not, with your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here.  I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting. Thanks!

Hi Nick,

I see Crystal tested your file and responded as a part of your Support case on March 7 sharing:

Thanks so much for sharing your file with me. I was able to recreate the inconsistent flickering of the tile images when hovering over them after publishing to my own Articulate Online account. I also recreated the issue in a new file with different images. I noticed that Safari also had a lot of glitchy looking behavior as well.

I'm going to document this behavior as a bug so my team can have a look. I don't have a workaround to offer currently. I saw the same behavior with a custom state that is triggered on hover. I will keep you updated about the status, but if you have further questions, please let me know!

This issue has gone to our Engineering team to dig into and work towards a fix. As soon as we have more info to share or an update for you, we'll post here and respond to you directly via email!
