Error Message

Jun 15, 2016

Hi,

Just received this message:

"The project file could not be saved.

Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component."

How can I save the work on this project without losing anything that was already saved?

Thanks for your help.

Molly

Hi, Molly -- Thanks so much for your question and I'm really sorry to hear of your troubles! There is a chance your file could be corrupt beyond recovery. However, there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

And, in order to avoid corruption in the future, please see this article: Follow These Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Corrupting or Losing Project Files.

Please let us know if you are all set or still need more help!

Hi James!

It sounds like your file is open, and you currently cannot save and close the file. Is that right?

Is this file saved to your local hard drive, or is it stored on a network drive? If it's already stored locally, try saving it to a different folder on your local drive.

Also, try saving using a different file name (short with no symbols), and let me know if that makes a difference.

Hi Alyssa,

The issue was actually related to a policy issue in my company’s network that was affecting many PC owners, myself included. Everything is resolved now.

Also, I work in a environment (financial company) that is configured to direct all project files to a network drive. I’m unable to save on a local drive. Whereas this is not a best practice, it’s what I have to work with. I also have to wait for SL3 software updates to be tested and configured before I can update my own SL3. Might you know of similar users who develop in strict enterprise environments and the best practices that they have?

If not, then no worries. I’m trying to create an optimal development environment and at least explain my reasoning as to why.

Thanks,

Hi James,

First, I wanted to let you know it looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email. You can remove that if needed by clicking ‘Edit’ beneath your response. Here’s a quick Peek video if you need help.

I'm glad you were able to resolve the connection issue - and I'll leave it to the ELH community to weigh in on any similar networking environments.  We recommend working on files locally (you can always backup to a network once you're done) due to issues with network/server latency that could introduce corruption into your project.  You'll find our recommendations and best practices outlined in that link.

Let us know if you need anything else - we're here to help!
