I am using the trial version of Articulate Stroryline and someone has sent me a file created in Storyline and when I try to open it I get an error message. Wouldn't the trial version be using the newer version?
I'd agree with Creativ Technologies answer here - and you'll want to ensure that you and your colleague are both working with local project files. There is an article here on how to set up a collaborative work flow.

The error you are getting is not due to the trial version perhaps the file you got may be corrupt or not downloaded correctly to your computer.
