Events in Storyline

Hi, is it possible to set up events in Storyline?  I need to set up a background task that can respond to changes in variable values passed to/from Javascript.  For example, I want to be able to automatically move to the next slide based on whether a variable becomes true on a slide, independent of learner input.

I thought I may be able to use the timeline to loop around to check a variable continuously but can't seem to be able to do this.
