not sure of your setup - here is a sample slide in SL2. Rectangle is hidden when timeline starts, triggered to normal when timeline reaches 0.25 secs and exit animation fades out at 1 sec. Appears to be working for me. Tried it with fly out exit animation and it worked as well.

Don't expect the exit animation to kick in until the object disappears. Use an entrance animation for when it appears. Also note that changing the state to or from hidden doesn't qualify as it appearing or disappearing.
There is a chance that the animation has run before the trigger makes it visible.
Like Wendy, I'm not sure of your details without seeing it, but if it has a life span of one second on the timeline, that second is controlled by the timeline. It doesn't start when the object becomes unhidden.

In this case I'd expect that the timeline of the object would run out, as
it's set to last for 1 second.
It's changed from hidden to normal, but not back to hidden.
There is a chance that the animation has run before the trigger makes it visible.
