External files not being created

Mar 26, 2015

Hello Storyline Community,

I'm having a problem I'm hoping you might be able to help with. Have a course with a few hotspots with triggers to link to PDF documents that Storyline will not create external files for when I publish for LMS.

I've tried numerous file locations and shortened the paths as much as possible, but every time I publish it, they are not included in the external files folder in the output.

I've been able to do this with no issues in other courses the exact same way I'm doing it for this one. Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?

Only difference for this one is it was an English version that I've exported and imported translated content. But the triggers are new and I've done this on another translated project without this problem, so really at a loss as to what the issue could be on this one.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks ever so much,

Elena

HI Elena,

When you publish the project, are the PDFs in theĀ \story_content\external_files folder?

If not, if you add them in yourself, do the links then work?

It's been a bit hit and miss in my limited experience of this as to when the PDFs are published, but as they tend to keep the same filename as the original, you can sometimes just add it to the folder after and it works.

Are you zipping in Storyline once you've published or using other zipping software?

If you zip in storyline and then add the files you need to ensure that these are being compressed too when you add them, if not then they might cause issues.

The other thing to look at is the path to the files in the code. It is normally in the imsmanifest.xml, frame.js and frame.xml files in the unzipped folder. If you can open those in something like Dreamweaver then you can see whether they contain the PDF locations.
