file corrupt

Nov 08, 2016

I am 99% finished with a project and now I can't open it.  Says file corrupt.  Any ideas?  I can open all other projects.  Any suggestions?

Hi Mindy! I'm sorry to hear about the difficulty you're having with your file. First you'll want to check the following which could have caused file corruption.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

There may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

  1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
  2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop
  3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
  4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

File corruption is unpredictable, and there's no straightforward way to determine what causes it. Common causes are environmental (disk errors, power outages, improper shutdowns), viruses, failed Windows updates, and even file size (i.e., very large files have a higher risk of corrupting). Consider using the preventative measures described in this article to protect your project files for the future.

All of these ‘preventative measures’ I already use….(Picture proof) The only thing that happened since I last worked on the file was the update storyline pushed to my computer. I am not locating the temporary file but have done a lot of uninstalling, reinstalling, etc. Did you try opening the file? I provided it. I also followed these steps without luck. Are these my only options?????

I would be happy to test the file for you on my end. I see that you attached an image, but I don't see where you attached the file. Would you mind attaching it again? You can use the Add Attachment button at the bottom of the Reply window.

Also, just wanted to let you know that when you reply to a thread via email, your comment will include your email signature. You're welcome to pop in and edit out any personal info if desired.

Hi Mindy,

Thanks so much for sending over your file. Unfortunately, I was not able to open it. I also tried renaming it and importing the slides into a new file, but that did not work either.

I wanted to mention that its unlikely that the file corruption is connected to the Storyline update, released in October. File corruption can be hard to pinpoint and can stem from a number of causes.

Again, I'm so sorry for the trouble you're experiencing. I know this is frustrating. You're always welcome to share the file with our support engineers if you'd like to see if they're able to do anything additional with it.
