FIle Corrupt unable to access !!!!

Mar 04, 2015

I was working on a project that was fine and opened perfectly in the morning, when i went to save in the afternoon - something went wrong and now i am getting the following error message.

This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of storyline.

It was created in Storyline2.  i have got my IT department to restore an earlier version of the file from backup tapes before it all went wrong and this still hasnt worked and they said it may be a bug in the software !! i have no idea if this can be fixed.

Afternoon Kerry

All things are possible i suppose

Theres the IT old favourite turn it on and off again! (surprisingly always worth a go)

If the bug is software related and not file related. its always worth reinstalling the software. as well.

or trying on another machine !

Oh and of course make sure the file is held locally when working off network drives articulate dosent always play ball.

Importing didn't work nor did reinstalling but managed to get it back from temp files after some advice from technical support . Here are steps for anyone else

If you cannot import it to a new project file, then it appears to be corrupt beyond recovery. However, there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer:

%appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Sadly none of these solutions are working for me!  I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, I have it saved locally, I tried locating in temp file and it's nowhere to be found.  This is not the first time this has happened and usually importing to a new file seems to work.  Not this time and I have now lost a significant amount of work that is due this Friday (4/11).  I am getting increasingly frustrated with the instability of Storyline 2.

Hello Tara - Sorry to hear that you are having difficulty with this. I'm assuming that you have followed the instructions shared above, but I wanted to share here just in case.

There may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

File corruption is unpredictable, and there's no straightforward way to determine what causes it. Common causes are environmental (disk errors, power outages, improper shutdowns), viruses, failed Windows updates, and even file size (i.e., very large files have a higher risk of corrupting). Consider using the preventative measures described in this article to protect your project files.

If you wish to work directly with our support engineers to be sure that your installation is working properly, you are welcome to do so here as the instability you are reporting is not expected behavior.
