Files and Layers Disappearing from Articulate Storyline

Jul 08, 2015

Hi all,

I started working on my Articulate Storyline project this morning and noticed that about half of the layers that I had previously added aren't showing up. These are mostly images and audio files.

They do still show in the mini preview of the slide in the left side-bar, and they are also still present in the timeline. However, I am unable to preview the slide; both the play button next to the timeline and the preview button itself trigger a warning that Articulate may close. Attempts to publish also result in this error.

I should note that the project is located on a network drive, however normally if a file is inaccessible Articulate will display a bright red box in place of the object. I've checked the connection to the remote drive and everything seems normal. All of the assets are accessible, and the ones that have disappeared are in the same folder as many that are still present.

Any clues as to steps that I could take here? I have already tried copying the entire project folder with its assets to my local drive, and have also tried creating a new project and pasting in the broken slides. Neither have resolved the issue. Any help would be much appreciated - I've probably lost about 2 days worth of work here.

Hi Charles,

Unfortunately, it sounds like your file has been corrupted by working from a network drive. You seem to be aware of this now, but please take a look at the following:

Because the file is corrupted, there really isn't an easy way to fix it. Corruption is by nature, unpredictable. An import into a new file may fix some things or all of it, where a copy and paste failed. The short of it is that you may need to recreate things from scratch, making sure that everything including assets are local when working, saving, or publishing the file.

In fact, recreating from scratch may be quicker than going through each slide, layer by layer and object by object. What I mean by that, is that you would have to start off by deleting one to two slides at a time, maybe a few slides at a time. This would all be in an effort to determine which slides are causing issues. Not all of your slides may be corrupted after all.

Once you've narrowed down your slides, then you could restore those slides and then narrow it down to specific objects that may be causing issues, following the same methodology as you did with the slides themselves. You would delete each object until the problem goes away. Keep in mind, that in some cases, the whole slide could be corrupted and no amount of changes will fix it, short of deleting it and starting over.

I wish there were better options available. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the above.

Always Happy to Help,

Adrian
