Find (spot) Story files where a SWF file has been imported as movie

Oct 02, 2020

Hello,

As you may know by now, we have to re-publish our Story files to HTML5 before the end of year.

The problem we have now is that a few of our projects contain SWF movies that have been imported in some slides.

Is there a way to find those Story files among others ? It could be "search for SWF files that are above 5Mb in output folders", whatever solution that does not need to review every course in search of empty slides!

As you can see, Review knows where SWF movies where (you can read "swf"):

Thanks.

Hi Pierre!

Thanks for writing in, and excellent question.

Referencing the published output, is there a way to determine which Storyline files contain SWF movies?

đź—’Context: Flash movies (SWF files) only work in Flash courses. As a result, they'll stop working on January 1, 2021. We recommend replacing Flash movies with non-Flash videos, such as MP4 files, and then republishing your courses as HTML5 output. This resource covers how the end of Flash will affect Articulate apps and courses in 2021.

Yes, there is a way to determine which .story file has SWF files. Here's how:

  1. Extract all the .story files into a main folder of your choice.
  2. Once you've extracted all the .story files, navigate to the main folder with all the course subfolders and set a search for *.swf
  3. In Windows Explorer, use that view to determine which .story files contain SWF files.
*My teammate, Michael, runs through these steps in this quick video demo!

đź“ťBonus Tip: If you're using Articulate 360, use the media library feature. That way, you can easily replace every instance of these movies with non-Flash videos all at once.
