Finished course automatically restarts when revisiting

Jan 30, 2014

To prevent skipping in a course, we are using a restricting navigation. It allows users to only jump to subjects/slides that they have already seen. And it works great .

Also when resuming a course (that isn't finished yet), it works great. But when a user decides to revisit a finished course, the course automatically restarts again without saving visited subjects/slides. For example; when a user wants to review slide 11, he first has to view slide 1 till 10.

Is it possible to resume a finished course at the last slide? In stead of starting it all over again?

Hi there Rick and welcome to the community!

Really, really quick question - what are your resume settings for the overall course and the slides? Are they resetting to the initial state, resuming saved state, etc.?

Are you able to share your .STORY file here? If so, maybe we could take a look and see what's going on. Also - keep in mind that if the file is too large, it may not post to the forums.

Thanks!

Hi Rick,

Thanks for sharing the file! The course, from what I could understand, is really well done :)

First, I went through the course and completed it. When revisiting, I'm taken back to the last slide I had open (the final slide). If I move back in the course, I can see the results slide. I'm able to view the review the answers I submitted for the quiz as well.

I tested this in Flash, after uploading to Articulate Online for testing.

You can take a look here:

Testing Revisiting for Rick

Now, I did notice that the settings for the course were for CD publishing. Can you tell me if the behavior is the same for you with the link I provided above, or were you trying to resume at a different point than the one I described?

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

Normally we upload a training to our LMS. Please see the settings we use above.

With the link you provided, the behavior is as we want it to be So probably there's something wrong with the communication between our LMS and Storyline. When a user revisits a module that is not finished (incomplete) they get the pop-up that asks to continue. When a user revisits a module that is finished (passed), the 'history' is gone and the module resets.

Hopefully you can help us out!

Thanks in advance!

Hi there Rick,

I apologize for the long delay! I've been out of the office.

Thanks for sharing that information - I'm happy to hear that the link I shared earlier worked as desired for you.

I know it's been a while. Have you had any luck with this on your end?

If not, it may help to try contacting the LMS to see if there's something specific tied to the resume functionality of their service. From what I'm seeing in that screenshot, it looks like the only option to resume would be when the entire course is marked as complete/max attempts have been met. If there's no option to allow resume before those conditions are met, I'd be surprised - but that may be the issue.

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

No problem. Thank you for your answer.

We are only facing this issue with the Storyline courses we uploaded to the LMS. We've also uploaded several Articulate Studio courses, and with that courses the resuming works fine.

The LMS settings are for the Storyline and Studio courses are exactly the same.

With this additional info, are you sure it's an LMS issue in stead of a Storyline issue?

Hi there Rick,

The reason I believe it might be something LMS related is because the test I shared with you seems to work properly. That was the case, correct?

If you'd like to confirm, you could also test using a server other than your LMS on your end.

You could try using SCORM Cloud.

Another option would be to use our Tempshare server. Just keep in mind that this server is only available for testing content - it is not officially supported by Articulate and all content will be removed automatically after 10 days.

In addition, you could also use Dropbox. Just remember that you'll need to place your content in the "Public" folder. Also, you'll need to make sure that the folder is enabled. To do so, click on this link.

You're always welcome to try out Articulate Online, as well - we recommend this service for tracking and reporting Articulate-created content and it's available for a free 30 day trial.

It may also help to take a look at the articles here and here. The suggestions provided in those articles may help with issues that seem to be LMS-specific.

If you do test using a different server and you still see the same thing, please share the link with me so I can take a look as well. It may also help to see if you experience the same problem in a new project file.

Let me know how it goes :)

Thanks!

Good morning Rick!

Thanks very much for the update. I appreciate it :)

I'm glad to hear that the course worked well in SCORM Cloud - that's an excellent tool for narrowing down issues with projects, especially those that may be LMS-specific.

Hopefully your LMS team will be able to work with you on this, if it's something that's required with your project. If not, perhaps another host might be an option.

Best of luck and have a wonderful day!

Christine
