Flash based form for collecting user data starts showing blank screens on a number of web browsers

May 08, 2017

Dear reader,

In the beginning of last year I've created an e-leaning module which includes a Flash based form by which a user can enter her/his contact information (e-mail address, telephone number, etc.). Flash Action Script takes care of the entered user data together with the values of a number of Artuculate Storyline variables and calls a PHP script to send and e-mail to the user. This solution was inspired by one of the discussions on this topic on our SL community.

Today more an more users are getting a blank page when the Flash form is accessed from the e-learning module. It seems to depend on the web browser (version) they are using. Since the problem did not occur last year I assume it has to do with the release of newer webbrowser versions and the support of Flash.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Can I replace Flash with HTML5 doing the same thing? I''m still an Articulate Storyline 2 user, should I upgrade for a working solution?

Thanks for your answers and suggestions!

Regards,

Geert Jan

Hi Geert,

Was this Flash form created outside of Storyline? Does the rest of your Storyline course work correctly in Flash browsers? Have you confirmed that these users don't have Flash disabled in their browser (for example, Chrome now disables it by default).

If you have the option to update it to HTML5 that may help, but you could also provide a prompt to users to enable Flash as a part of their browser.

Thanks for your replies!

As an intermediate solution I'll follow your suggestion to prompt the user to enable Flash.

Flash was created outside of Storyline (using an Adobe tool). The rest of the course works correctly. I'll see if I can convert the current Flash/Actionscript file to HTML5. Any recommended tools?
