Flash/HTML Output Converting Courses

Jan 23, 2020

Our company has been publishing files flash/html5 outputs. Will this output  format be an issue when flash is no longer supported by browser when it is launched in our LMS?

Hi there, Marie. Great question!

HTML5 output from Storyline 1 and Storyline 2 works in Chrome and Safari. However, it won't work reliably in other browsers. We recommend upgrading to Storyline 3 or Articulate 360 (which includes Storyline 360) as these apps don't have any Flash dependencies and their HTML5 output works in all major browsers.

This article covers everything you need to prepare for a Flash-free future. If there's anything else I can answer or clarify, I'll be here!

I had a few follow up questions/scenarios.

1.On tablet, we had reported issues that completion wasn't working when the employees used Chrome. We had to use Puffin to ensure completion. Do you know of a reason why that is the case? I am not 100% sure which version of the articulate authoring tool was used.

2. Also, if we publish currently, should we publish html5/flash. If we publish only hmtl5, would it cause an issue for browswer that have flash enabled.

3. If the published file was done in 360 as flash/html5 output, would that be okay in 2021.

Hi Marie,

Thanks for following up, and I'm happy to help clarify your questions:

1. It's odd that you would need Puffin to ensure completion, as the latest version of Chrome is supported and should be completing as expected. I'm not aware of any errors causing that, but I would reach out to our support engineers to do a deep dive into the course and see if anything is causing the issue.

2. Even if a browser has Flash enabled, publishing to HTML5 should still work correctly.

3. More and more browsers are starting to block Flash and/or prompt you to allow it, at least until December 31, 2020. While published courses will continue to work if they include an HTML5 output, any Flash-only courses should be republished to HTML5. I recommend publishing to HTML5 only to ensure a Flash-free experience now and into 2021. The article Katie shared above covers some good FAQs on the sunsetting of Flash, and I just wanted to share it again for others who come across this discussion!

Hi Alisha and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Thanks for contacting us to share what your users are experiencing in your published course.

  • Are you able to replicate the behavior they are seeing?
  • Is this only happening in Chrome?
  • What version of Storyline 360 was the course published in?

With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.
