For the information of anybody else that might need this:
I think it is easier to start with states, because once you create a Selected state, the system will take it from there; no need to write any triggers. But if you already have it started with layers, it may be easier to finish with layers. Create a second layer for each card; one showing the back, and the other showing the front. Create a trigger for the front that shows the back layer when clicked, and one for the back that shows the front layer when clicked.

Make the original appearance of the card the Normal state, and the back side the Selected state. Clicking on it will change from one to the other.

I currently have the flip sides on layers - do you mean to remove the layers and just change by states instead?
