I'm simulating software where the user must select 3 out of 6 buttons correctly on a screen before proceeding. After the first attempt, I want to give them a hint and have them Try Again. After the second attempt (and every attempt thereafter - the number of attempts is unlimited), I want to point out the correct configuration. But instead of allowing them to proceed, I want to force the user to answer the question correctly before they proceed to the next slide. If they keep answering incorrectly, then they continue to get the 2nd attempt feedback.
My reason for wanting to do it this way? If my user returns to this screen via the BACK button in my software simulation (the user can navigate freely back and forth within a 7 screen sequence in our software), I want this screen to show the correct buttons selected.
You may want to check out this thread where I helped another user recently. This should at least get you started and then let us know if you need anything else.
Thanks Ashley and sorry it took me two weeks to get back on this project. The example you referenced above is for a "Pick One" multiple choice question and my question is a "Pick Many." With the Pick Many, I don't see an option for "Feedback by Choice."
Correct, the pick many doesn't have a feedback by choice. You may want to look at a few other threads such as this one, or this one. It's a bit more customized set up using the pick many option.
Here's my sample file. After the second attempt (and every attempt thereafter - the number of attempts is unlimited), I want to point out the correct configuration. But instead of allowing them to proceed, I want to force the user to answer the question correctly before they proceed to the next slide.
So only after the second attempt you'd want the user to see the correct answer, but have to continue answering the question? If so, I'd look at setting the attempts to unlimited, and then customize a second try again layer to be shown after the second attempt. You could track that using a variable on the first "try again" layer and since it's only two attempts before seeing the correct answer, a true/false variable would work. Once the value of the variable is True, and the user submits the question that is still incorrect you'll set it up to show the other try again layer with the correct information.
Thanks Ashley. I've worked all morning on this and can't get it to work as you suggested (and I would classify my knowledge and use of variables as very good).
Success (finally)!! I abandoned the Freeform question type and just went with straight-up layers with a number variables (I could not get a T/F variable to work, but I made a lot of revisions after switching to numbers, so it should work as well). Attached is my solution. The downside of this is that I don't have the built-in "you must answer the question" feedback, but that could be added in another layer.

Hi Mark,
No worries - we're still here. :-)

You may want to review the information here on working with variables.

Hi Mark,
I'm glad you were able to figure out a method that worked for you and thanks for sharing your example here as well.
Thanks Mark for your excellent examples.
Cheers,
Michael
